Podcast lets Left meet Right

edit Tom Paine, Brian of London and others 2008-04-07 19:07 UTC 5 comments  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·

This week we have a deep and meaningful discussion that ranges across the political spectrum. Douglas Murray and Nick Cohenjoin Tom Paine to disucuss the failures on both Left and Right to come to terms with a Jihadi threat.

On the Right we have Douglas Murray, the director of the think tank, Centre forSocial Cohesion and the author of "Neo-Conservatism:Why We Need It".

From the Left, broadly speaking, as he's not on good terms with most of his former comrades just at present, is Britishjournalist Nick Cohen, author of "What's Left: How Liberals Lost their Way".

This is the first of a two part disucssion and should not be missed. They explore the failing of the left and of parts ofthe right to come to terms with the real enemy everyone is facing

In blog news this week we look at the case of the 8 men accused of trying to blow aeroplanes out of the sky. Naughty, naughty if you jumped to the conclusion that this might involve Islam.

We are also looking in to the sex scandal involving Max Mosley. You can do your own google search for the sex tape. Youdon't need my help.

I cover a little personal trip I took to a conference in New York. Details can be found here.

We have our regular chat with Evan Sayet and you can pre-order hisnew book on Amazon

Doug Payton is covering more Obama magic and makes reference to flying penguines. You can see the BBC footage of these bygoing here.

Excellant feature this week. As a long time reader and fan of Cohen's work, it's great to hear him back on this podcast and back saying what needs to be said. He is that very rare creature, someone who is left wing and actually stands up for the values th progressive movement is supposed to stand for. The left is like the nice kids in school and the bullies. All the attention goes to bullies and dominate everyone by tyranny and it needs a tough kid in the nice kids to stand up against the bullies. Writers like Nick Cohen, David Aaronovich (my personal favourite) and Christopher Hitches serve this purpose.

It disgusts me how so many on the left are not only denying the threat from the Jihadis but apologising for it. They have convinced themselves that it's the fault of the west. That's why they always refer to "George Bush's War on Terror". I hate that phrase. It's not Bush's war, it's the jihadi's! THEY declared war on the West and NOT the other way around.

If wanting to stand up for what we believe in and believing freedom and democracy are universal human rights, which should be defended by force if neccessary makes me the bastard child of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, then so be it. According to many of my "comrades" on the left thinking that makes me conservative. Which bares no relation on my views on so many other issues.

Keep up the good work, it's needed to stand up to the bullies. Especially if that work contains Merryl Yourish, she's great. No offence to the rest of you.

Very good show this week! I love Evan Sayet.  he's both funny and highly informative.  Did you catch his speech at the Heritage Foundation last year? It's one of the best articulations of the liberal mind I have ever heard.  You should definitely take a few minutes and watch.

You guys are awesome, keep up the great work

John

Every once in a while I stumble upon an article or a site that gives me hope that the rest of humanity has not gone barking mad.  Today I found Shire Network News.

 I'll be back...with friends.

Great work as usual, guys.

And a big thank you to Brian for your few words on the passing of Charlton. He is my all time favourite actor, and a fair few of my fave films (surprise!) star him in them.

 Keep it up. :)

cheers

Looking forward to the Podcast every week. Having said that, I have a few suggestions for future shows:

It would be great if you could have Hugh Fitzgerald on. I'm not sure if he does interviews but it would be refreshing to hear him speak (as opposed to his über-long written rants at Robert Spencer's blog).

Might also be interesting if you could interview one of Sweden's (I know this blog is supposed to be about the Anglosphere but you did have the Vlaams Belang "leader", or whatever Dewinter calls himself, on so it would be fair to have a Swede on as well) leading bloggers. Per Gudmundson is a guy who, if I remember correctly, started blogging way before he got the job as one of the editors of Sweden's leading newspaper -- Svenska Dagbladet, a newspaper that IMO is centre-right even though they call themselves "borgerliga", which might be traslated into "non-Socialist". He has written a LOT about Jihadists with Swedish connections. Should also add that he is not a great friend of Sverigedemokraterna (or Sweden Democrats, the Swedish equivalent of BNP) but I believe he knows quite a lot about the history of the party and why some Swedes are drawn into supporting it. He also had a blog post (and an opinion piece in Svenska Dagbladet) the other day about Arab Leaders being invited to the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) to celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the Arab League. The discussion during the "celebration" was supposed to be about "Dialogue, Democracy and Human Rights", (don't you just love to discuss such things with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, etc.), but as you might suspect it turned into demands that Sweden should outlaw "Islamophobia", "modernise" Freedom of Speech, and that we should commemorate not only the Holocaust but also "other Holocausts" (such as the "Palestinian" "Holocaust", no doubt).

Anyway, without turning into Hugh Fitzgerald II, I think Mr. Gudmundsson might have some interesting things to say, because as we all know -- the Jihadists are at war with not only America and Israel, but the entire free world.
